Day 04 : Gangotri to Yamunotri

According to the legend ancient, sage Asit Muni had his hermitage here. All his life, he bathed daily both in the Ganges and the Yamuna. Unable to go to Gangotri during his old age, a stream of the Ganges appeared opposite Yamunotri for him. The temple and the place opens every year on the auspicious day of the Akshaya Tritya, which generally falls during the last week of April, or the first week of May. The temple always closes on the sacred day of Diwali in mid-October - first week of November, with a brief ceremony. The temple staff return to their villages and for the rest of the time the valley is gripped in no-man silence and covered with a white sheet of snow. With the melting of the snow next summer, the temple re-opens. The daughter of the Sun god, Surya and consciousness, Sangya the birthplace of the Yamuna is the Champasar Glacier (4,421 m) just below the Banderpoonch Mountain. The mountain adjacent to the river source is dedicated to her father, and is called Kalind Parvat, Kalind being another name of Surya. Yamuna is known for her frivolousness, a trait that she developed because, according to a common story, Yamuna's mother could never make eye contact with her dazzling husband.

Day 03: Gaurikund to Badrinath

On the way, we halt for lunch and regain the trek to reach Kedarnath by late afternoon. On arrival, we go to the hotel and freshen up. After this you can go for darshan and pooja at the Kedarnath Temple. You can also visit Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, located at the back of the temple. After this, you return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 04: Badrinath to Srinagar

After breakfast at Kedarnath, we once again resume trekking towards Gaurikund. On arrival, we drive back to Guptkashi for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 05: Srinagar to Kotdwaror Hardwar

After breakfast, we leave for Badrinath, via Joshimath. Enjoying the drive through the medicinal forests, we halt at Pipalkoti for lunch. After this, we travel further to reach Badrinath by late afternoon. You can rest or enjoy the scenic beauty of the place in the evening. This is followed by dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

How to Reach Haridwar

By Air : The city of Haridwar does not have an airport and the nearest air link is provided by Jolly Grant (45 km) of Kotdwar. If coming from any city outside India, it will be better to take a flight to Delhi (200 km) and then reach Haridwar by train or bus.

Places to See in Haridwar

Har ki Paudi : The sacred Ghat on Ganges was constructed by King Vikramaditya in memory of his brother Bhartrihari. Har ki Paudi means Steps (Paudi) of Shiva (Hari). It is believed that Shiva and Vishnu have visited the ghat in the Vedic Era. The ghat is said to have a large footprint, supposed to be that of Vishnu. Legends have it that Brahma had performed a Yagna (Prayers) at the banks of Ganga, on Har ki Paudi.

Chandi Devi : The temple of Chandi Devi is set atop the Neel Parvat. The modern temple was constructed by Suchat Singh, ruler of Kashmir, in 1929 AD. The temple is a 3 km trek from Chandi Ghat. It is believed that the main statue was established by the Adi Sankaracharya in 8th Century AD. Chandi Devi Tetple is also accessible by a ropeway, which starts near Gauri Shankar Temple.

Maya Devi Temple : The temple is said to be at the site of the place where heart and navel of Sati fell. The temple is amongst one of the Shaktipeeths in India.

Mansa Devi Temple : The temple on the top of Bilwa Parvat is dedicated to the Goddess Mansa Devi. Here, one statue of the Goddess has three mouths and five arms while the other statue has eight arms. The rope way carriage operates between Upper road, near the station and Mansa Devi Temple.

Daksha Mahadev Temple : The ancient temple of Daksha Mahadev, is situated in the South of Kankhal town, which is 4 Km from Haridwar. The mythological story about this place, is that king Daksha Prajapati, father of Sati (Lord Shivas first wife) performed yagya at this place. Daksha Prajapati did not invite Lord Shiva and Sati felt insulted. Therefore, she burnt herself in the yagya kund. This incident provoked the disciples and followers of Mahadev, who killed King Daksha, but later on Lord Mahadev brought him back to life. Daksha Mahadev temple is thus a tribute to this legend.

Bharat Mata Temple : About 4 Km from Haridwar, the Bharat Mata Temple, is a real beautiful temple, having six floors. The ground floor has the beautiful statue of Bharat Mata. The first floor has the Sant Temple, which has statues of great saints like Buddha, Mahavir, Guru Nanak.

Bhimgoda : The canal which is constructed here, diverts the water of the Ganges into the Bhimgoda Headworks Dam which is worth seeing. It looks magnificient when surplus water is allowed to flow out of the dam as it produces soft foam. Beautiful fountains and toy canals are found here, BHIMGODA TANK - The sacred tank, which is situated at a distance of 1 km from Har-Ki-Pauri is believed to have been excavated by Bhim (the 2nd of the Pandava Brothers) by giving heavy blows with his right knee at this place and therefore this tank is named after him.

Gurukul Kangri University : The university follows the ancient Indian way of teaching. Students dress up as monks and study in Gurukul. There is Ved Mandir in the premises, which houses many archaeological exhibits. The Ved Mandir museum with archaeological exhibits in display can also be seen.

Sapt Rishi Ashram : Far in the jungles of Sapt Sarovar in the north direction of Haridwar, just 5 Km off the city, this hermitage is situated on the banks of the Ganges River. The Ganga flows in seven streams in front of this Ashram, hence this place is also called Sapt Sarovar.

Shanti Kunj : It is the famous ashram of Gayatri. Followers and pilgrims from far and wide converge here for yoga and natural cures.

Places to See in Rishikesh

Bharat Mandir : This temple is dedicated to Bharat, Lord Ram's brother, It lies near Triveni Ghat is reputed to be the oldest temple in Rishikesh. The temple's presiding deity is a black stone Vishnu, which is believed to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya when he visited Rishikesh in the 9th century. This occasion is commemorated with special celebrations on the day of Basant Panchami, the spring festival.

Triveni Ghat : This is a sacred bathing ghat is confluence ganga, yamuna and saraswat river. Daily in the morning and evening there are thousands who take bath here and enjoy the Maha Aarti being performed. It very soothing to sit on the banks of the river and enjoy the cool breeze from the river.

Lakshman Jhula : The hanging bridge across Ganga. About 5 kms upstream is the old footbridge called Lakshmanjhula, named after the brother of Lord Rama. Temples line both sides of the river at Lakshmanjhula.

Shivanand Jhoola : Shivanand Jhoola is another suspension bridge spanning the river along the ancient route to Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Ashrams in Rishikesh : There are many important ashrams in Rishkesh. Most ashrams are centres for spiritual studies which also calls for Physical disciplines. Some ashrams, however, are monasteries. Among the better known ashrams are :- Paremarth Niketan, Sivanand Ashram, Yoga Niketan, Omkaranand Ashram, Vanprastha Ashram, Ved Niketan, Dayanand Vedanta Ashram, Vanmali Gita Yogashram, Shankaracharya Nagar Transcendental Meditatation Centre, Vithal Ashram and Yoga Study Centre.

Rishikund : Close to Trivenighat is the most anciant place, the rishikund. Anciant records relate this to Kubz Saint , who was blessed by the Goddess Yamuna by saturating this pond by its water.The pond reflects the temple of Ragunath , deicated to lord rama and his wife.

Tera Manzil Temple : A multistory temple complex of idols of hindu Gods, and Goddesses. Very popular among the domestic pilgrims. One can have an excellent view of the entire area from the top floor of the temple complex. Sunset view from this place in winters is a excellent option.

Neelkanth Mahadev : It is a place of interest especially for the religious minded tourists. It is said to be the place where Lord Shiva drank the venom that had come out during the cosmic churning of the ocean by the gods and demons. The spot is at a distance of 12 km from the centre of Rishikesh town and is surrounded by lush, sylvan forests.

Chilla : Chilla, situated just 16 km away from the main Rishikesh town, is famous for the Rajaji National Park. The park (820 sq km) has wildlife in abundance and is especially known for its wild elephants. The Sariska sanctuary is 37 km from Rishikesh. It was established in AD 1955 and is located in the valley of the Aravalli range.

Narendra Nagar : Just 15 kilometres on the Rishikesh-Chamba road is the historical town of Narendra Nagar. This is a town of archaeological importance, built by the King of Tehri, Narendra Singh. The royal palace here is worth seeing as is the magnificent statue of Lord Shiva's attendant, the Nandi bull that stands here.
