Uttarakhand plans to start 'gotra tourism', will also develop a 'logo' for each gotra

Uttarakhand is planning to start "gotra tourism" packages to encourage visitors to "visit places associated with the sages after whom the principal gotras are named". The Times of India reported that tourists can also "update their family records" through these packages. The plan was announced by chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.

There are believed to be seven "gotras" or clans named for seven sages who were their originators. The sages are believed to have meditated in "Dev Bhoomi", or Uttarakhand, which is why this package is being planned. Times of India also quoted the tourism secretary Dilip Jawalkar as saying that "lineage records" maintained by tirth purohits would be digitised. "We intend to put the details of family geneaologies online so that people can get to know about their family history and feel motivated to come to Uttarakhand to get it updated on frequent basis."

Part of this project will include developing "logos" for each gotra while putting together the tourism packages. The chief minister said this is so "people can identify with their gotras in a better manner".
